SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated University of Illinois-Chicago 7-1 at the Early Bird Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The Broncos fell 4-1 against Long Beach State in the morning game. Santa Clara is 2-2 on the season.

Santa Clara took the early lead over Illinois-Chicago scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Jenny Brown led off with a walk, followed by a single from freshman Angela Kabanuck. With one out on the board from a ground out, sophomore Jessica Clee smashed a three-run homer to put the Broncos on the board.

Kabanuck finished the game four-for-four at the plate with two RBI's.

Senior Jaime Forman-Lau pitched the first five innings and was relieved by sophomore Liz Courter.

"We hit really well against Illinois-Chicago," head coach Marcy Crouch said. "We had eight of our nine hitter reach base and that is really exciting. We still have a lot of kinks that we need to work out, but I am happy to come out of the day one and one."

The Broncos dropped the morning game to home team Long Beach State. Forman-Lau pitched three innings and recorded the loss. Courter pitched the rest of the contest.

Clee tallied the Broncos' one run of the game with a solo homerun in the top of the second.

The Broncos will return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.
