SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell to UC Santa Barbara 4-1 this afternoon at the Early Bird Tournament hosted by the Gauchos at Campus Diamond.
The Broncos, 1-3 on the season, opened tournament play this morning with a 2-0 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago. Junior Jaime Forman-Lau struck out 10 during that contest.
Against UCSB, Santa Clara registered six hits, but did not score until the seventh inning. The Gauchos opened the contest with three scores in the first. The Broncos put up two hits in the bottom half of that frame, but could not convert. Santa Barbara added a run in the fifth on an RBI single from short stop Heather Nobbe.
Freshman Jessica Clee had a sacrifice fly to bring in pinch runner Kelley Johnson for the Broncos' only score of the game. That inning started when sophomore pitcher Jennifer Ponzo reached base on balls. Johnson ran for her and advanced to second on a single to right center from senior Coresta Salas. The runners advanced one base each on the next out, bringing up Clee.
Santa Clara will conclude tournament action tomorrow morning with another game against Long Beach State. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m.
