SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team earned its first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago, this morning at the Early Bird Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara at Campus Diamond.
The Broncos, 1-2 on the season, was led in the circle by junior Jaime Forman-Lau, who struck out 10 while pitching a complete game.
Santa Clara recorded a hit in each of the first three innings, but could not capitalize, leaving five runners on base.
The game remained scoreless through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Shannon Linerud opened the Bronco offense with a single to right field. Two outs later, she found herself on third. Fellow freshman Kate Goethals reached base on balls and then had junior Vanessa Werner run in her place. As Werner stole second, Linerud stole home for the game-winning run. Senior Lauren Fissori had an RBI single to bring Werner home.
The Flames registered two hits in the seventh inning, but the Bronco defense held up for the 2-0 victory.
The Broncos will play one more contests today, a rematch against UC Santa Barbara. Santa Clara will concluded tournament action on Sunday with another game against Long Beach State.
