Softball Splits at Stanford Fall Tournament

STANFORD, Calif. - Santa Clara University softball opened fall play today at the inaugural Stanford Fall Tournament at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Broncos defeated Sacramento City 3-1 but fell to host Stanford 4-0 in the pool-play tournament.

Sophomore Tess Nesbitt brought in junior Lauren Fissori and senior Sydney Wiginton in the fourth inning against Sacramento City while freshman pinch runner Keri Reisinger finished the Bronco scoring in the fifth, running for senior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez, who reached on error.

Freshman Kelley Johnson pitched five innings in first game to earn the victory.

Sacramento City scored its only run in the seventh inning.

In the opening game against the Cardinal, Rodriguez took the loss, pitching three innings, while freshman Jennifer Ponzo also took the mound for three.

Santa Clara will close weekend play against Sacramento City Sunday at 10 a.m. and Stanford at 3 p.m. Both contests will be played at Stanford's Smith Family Stadium.

The Broncos open the season against Southwest Missouri State at the Cal Poly Tournament on February 8. The invitational will continue in San Luis Obispo through the weekend with Santa Clara also facing Colorado State, host Cal Poly, Southern Utah and UC Santa Barbara.
