Softball Falls to Southern Utah, 2-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team dropped a close game to Southern Utah by a score of 2-0 Saturday night in San Luis Obispo, Calif., in its fourth game of the Cal Poly Tournament.

The Broncos were able to limit Southern Utah to only two hits through the first three innings, but it was the fourth inning that led to the demise of Santa Clara. The Thunderbirds scored both of their runs on two hits in the fourth inning to move ahead of the Broncos for good.

Hana Michiue led the way offensively for Southern Utah, going 2-for-4 with one run batted in, while Crystal Bingham went 1-for-3 with the team's other RBI.

The Broncos were only able to muster four hits off Southern Utah's starting pitcher Tracy Evans who fanned three of the 26 batters she faced.

Jennifer Ponzo threw four solid innings of relief for the Broncos, allowing only one hit while striking out two.

Kristi Harrington, Deanna Rodriguea, Coresta Salas and Sydney Wiginton each went 1-for-3 for the Broncos who fall to 4-4 on the season with the loss.

Earlier in the day the Broncos defeated the host school, Cal Poly, by a score of 2-0. The Broncos also split their games on Friday, defeating Colorado State by a score of 5-0, but losing to Southwest Missouri State, 2-0.

Santa Clara will wrap-up its play in the Cal Poly Tournament with a 2 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara.
