SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team began its play in the Cal Poly Tournament Friday afternoon with a two-game schedule against Southwest Missouri State and Colorado State.

The second game of the tournament for Santa Clara was just what the doctor ordered, as the Broncos scored five times on nine hits en route to the 5-0 victory over Colorado State (0-2).

Coresta Salas and Tracie Hall each went 2-for-4 in the game, with Salas scoring once and knocking in one run as well. Sydney Wiginton went 1-for-3 on the day with one run scored and a stolen base.

Deanna Rodriguez went the distance for Santa Clara (3-3) to pick up her second win of the season, allowing no runs on only three hits and striking out three.

Friday's first game against SW Missouri State was a tough one for the Broncos as they were limited to one hit in the 2-0 loss. SMS (1-0) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on two hits including Deanna Keim's leadoff triple to start the game.

Despite not allowing any more damage across the plate, Santa Clara just could not figure out SMS pitcher Tauni Kennemer who threw a complete game one hitter. The Broncos did put the ball in play however, as they were only struck out once on the day.

Jennifer Ponzo took the loss for the Broncos, as she allowed both runs in four full innings of work. Kelley Johnson threw two innings of hitless relief for Santa Clara, striking out five of the eight batters she faced.

Santa Clara will play two more games Saturday afternoon at the Cal Poly tournament, taking on the host, Cal Poly, at 2 p.m. before facing off with Southern Utah at 7 p.m.
