SANTA CLARA, Calif. - This evening at Marsalli Park the Broncos were defeated 4-2 in a heartbreaking first game, and 8-1 in the second contest to the New Mexico Lobos. Santa Clara moves to 9-16 on the season as the Lobos improve to 14-12.
In the first match of the doubleheader, the Broncos recorded their two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. Roni Rivera started the inning with a double down the left field line, and was replaced by pinch runner Coresta Salas. On a ground out to the pitcher by Melanie Barker, Salas was able to advance to third with one out in the inning. Sydney Wiginton then reached first on a fielder's choice and quickly stole second. Kristi Harrington also reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing Wiginton to third as Salas scored. Wiginton recorded the second run of the game as she scored on a throw to second.
Despite Santa Clara's early lead in the game, the Lobos managed to produce 4 runs in the top of the seventh, winning the game. The runs were scored by Cayley Warner, Krissy Keene, Brooke Chaffee, and Elena Cranmer.
Krista Barry moves her record to 5-7, allowing no earned runs, as Amy Dumas moves her record to 6-2.
In the second game of the evening, Harrington recorded the sole run of the game for the Broncos. She doubled to right center with two outs in the bottom of the second and stole third. Harrington was hit home with a single from Roni Rivera.
The Lobos drove home five runs in the top of the third and three in the fourth, highlighted by a two run homer by Kathy Moore.
Deanna Rodriguez moves to 4-8 on the season, also allowing no earned runs in the second game, as the New Mexico pitcher Hayley Punter splits her record at 5-5.
The Broncos remain at home and will host Cal Poly in a Saturday doubleheader at Marsalli Park. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at Noon.
