Head coach Jerry Smith enters his 17th year at the helm of the Santa Clara program. He is the winningest women's soccer coach in Santa Clara history, having compiled a record of 262-65-16 (.787) in 16 years, establishing a standard of excellence few can match.

Since taking over the head coaching duties at Santa Clara in the fall of 1987, Smith has built the Bronco soccer program into a national power. In 2001, he made the number 13 lucky once again, as he won his first NCAA College Cup National Championship in his 13th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. SCU appeared in the 2002 title match as well, and will aim for its 10th overall College Cup appearance with the 2003 season. The Broncos have won six West Coast Conference Championships and have placed runner-up three times, with three of those six championship teams posting perfect league marks.

The 2001 WCC Coach of the Year is fourth on the all-time NCAA coaching victory list. The Broncos have been ranked among the nation's Top 25 every season during his coaching tenure and have finished among the Top 10 in each of the last 14 campaigns. Additionally, Smith has coached 25 All-America selections, 14 U.S. National Team Players, 10 Academic All-America selections and five WCC Freshmen of the Year, including 2000 selection Veronica Zepeda. He coached 1999 National Player of the Year Mandy Clemens and No. 1 WUSA draft picks Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner.

Smith has also earned recognition on national and international levels. He led the U.S Under-21 National Team to its fourth straight Nordic Cup in 2001. Additionally, he has served on the FIFA Technical Report Team and was the Site Coordinator for Brazil during World Cup '94. In 1986, he headed up the District II Olympic Developmental Team for U17 boys.
