No. 12 Santa Clara Travels To Stanford For Nike Classic
Sept. 16, 2009
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresh off two huge victories over two top-ten opponents, the No. 12 Santa Clara women's soccer team (5-2-0) will travel the short distance up El Camino Real to Stanford University this weekend to take part in the Stanford/Nike Classic. The Broncos will face Wisconsin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 before facing off against No. 23 Colorado at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Santa Clara re-entered the NSCAA National Poll this week at No. 12 courtesy of two two-goal wins over then-No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 7 Purdue after being left out of the rankings last week. The Broncos also reached as high as No. 10 nationally on this week's Soccer America's poll. The Broncos are undefeated at home this season, going 3-0 on Buck Shaw and 5-2 overall. Santa Clara has converted 13 of its 42 shots on goal (.511) and has only allowed four goals this season, two of which have come during the run of play. Redshirt senior and central defender Jordan Angeli (Lakewood, Colo.) leads the team with three goals and seven points, and all three of her goals have been game-winners (penalty kick, flip throw-in follow up, and free kick). Freshman Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) follows Angeli with two goals and five points. Fellow freshman Lauren Matheson (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and junior Anessa Patton (Fresno, Calif.) also have two goals each and junior Maxine Goynes (Modesto, Calif.) leads in assists (2). Sophomore goalkeeper Bianca Henninger (Los Gatos, Calif.) has played every minute in goal and carries a 0.56 goals-against-average with three shutouts.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN The Badgers are 4-2-1 overall, having defeated regional opponents Green Bay, Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, and DePaul, while falling 3-0 to Notre Dame in their opening game of the season. Alev Kelter leads in scoring with two goals, as Wisconsin has only managed to find the net five times this season. Goalies Michelle Dalton and Lauren Gunderson have shared time in the net, and each has two shutouts to their name. Dalton has played in five games and looks to be the starter against the Broncos and carries a GAA of 0.96. Santa Clara is 1-1-0 all-time against the Badgers, and last played them in 1994, earning a 4-0 victory over the Big Ten side.
