Postgame Quotes: Santa Clara 3, San Jose 0

Aug. 22, 2008

Recap |  Box Score

Head coach Jerry Smith, on the game: "Almost everybody got to play and there are a lot of positives to take away from today's game, but I would like us to play a little sharper. I am glad we got the victory, a shutout and did not have any injuries."

Smith, on freshman Kathleen Matthew starting: "It is always tough for a freshman to start in their first game, but this is a great experience for her which she will be able to build on. All-in-all for a 90 minute performance she did well.

Smith, on the freshmen playing in their first collegiate games: "Five players played in their first college game," said Smith. "It was good to give our young players the opportunity to play because traditionally you do not play as well due to nerves. The exception would be Jenny (LaPonte) who scored her first goal fairly soon after she subbed in."

Kathleen Matthew, on first college start: "It was really exciting. This team is very talented, so I was really excited to join the team and play in the first game. I was a little nervous at first, but after the first goal I was able to settle in more comfortably."

Jenny LaPonte, on scoring first collegiate goal: "I was such a great feeling, especially because I was able to come back to my team and they were very proud of me. I know coming into this season we had lost a few key players, so I was glad I could come in and make a difference."
