FRESNO, Calif. – Playing in front of a crowd of 4,328 on the road, Santa Clara women's soccer beat Fresno State 1-0 in overtime to even its record. The win puts the Broncos at 2-2-0 on the season while the Bulldogs are now 0-3-0.
Santa Clara returns to the field on Fri., Sept. 6 vs. Maryland at 7 p.m. in the first game of an eight-game home stand.
The Broncos outshot Fresno State 27-11 and shots on goal were 13-8. Julie Johnston led the offense with the lone goal and four shots. Sofia Huerta had eight shots and four on goal while Andi Tostanoski collected eight saves.
Katie Devault picked up four saves for Fresno State in the first half while Alyssa Wilson had eight in the second half and overtime. Lauren Lindstrom collected four shots, all on goal, while Morgan Castain had two shots that were both on goal.
The Broncos had back-to-back shots on goal in the 12th minute from Jordan Jesolva and Huerta but Devault made both saves to keep the game scoreless.
Fresno State didn't have its first shot until the 25th minute off the foot of Castain but Tostanoski made the save.
Santa Clara outshot Fresno State 10-3 in the first half but shots on goal were tied at 3-3. The Broncos had the only two corners of the half. Tostanoski picked up three saves in the first half.
The second half was much of the same as Santa Clara outshot Fresno State 15-8 and had eight shots on goal to Fresno's five. Tostanoski made three saves in the final minute of regulation to help send the game into overtime.
The Broncos finally struck in the 95th minute off the foot of Johnston who scored the unassisted goal. It was the third goal of the year for Johnston and gave the Broncos the 1-0 win.
