Bronco Women's Soccer Tops Cal in Second Spring Game
In its second game of the spring season, Santa Clara women’s soccer topped Cal 3-2. Brittany Ambrose scored two goals and Kat McAuliffe scored the game winner. Katie Speidel and Jordan Jesolva each picked up one assist.

In the first spring game of the season, Santa Clara women’s soccer tied the Sacramento Storm 1-1. Sofia Huerta scored the lone Bronco goal while Katie Speidel had the assist.

Lisa Oyen Hired as Director of Women's Soccer Operations
Santa Clara women’s soccer officially announced the hiring of Lisa Oyen Ljubicic as the Director of Women’s Soccer Operations. Oyen served in the same role last season in a volunteer capacity. This is the first time in the history of Santa Clara women’s soccer that the Broncos will have a full-time Director of Operations.

Women's Soccer Releases Spring Schedule
Santa Clara women’s soccer announced its 2014 spring schedule today. The Broncos are scheduled to play five games at Buck Shaw with the first game coming April 6. Santa Clara will face the Sacramento Storm, Bay Area Breeze, and Ajax as well as Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford.

Santa Clara Extends Jerry Smith's Contract Seven Years; Announces Jerry Smith Coaching For Life Academy
Santa Clara University announced on Wednesday it has extended Bronco head women's soccer coach Jerry Smith’s contract for seven years. Smith is one of only three coaches in Division I women’s soccer to have won more than 400 career matches. In addition to leading the Broncos to the 2001 National Championship, Smith has seen the women reach the Final Four 10 times as well as winning 10 West Coast Conference titles in his 27-year history with the program.

Santa Clara Women's Soccer Coach Jerry Smith Has Contract Extended Seven Years
On a big day for Santa Clara Athletics, it was announced women’s soccer head coach Jerry Smith had his contract extended by seven years. Smith, who will be in his 28th season leading the Broncos in 2014, has built Santa Clara into a national presence. His success culminated with the 2001 national championship. Smith’s Broncos have advanced to 10 Final Fours and won 10 West Coast Conference titles.

Leslie Osborne To Be Inducted into WCC Hall of Honor
The West Coast Conference will induct its sixth annual Hall of Honor class on Saturday, March 8 at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. Ten individuals, one from each member institution, will be honored as part of the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships from March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena.

Two Broncos Taken in Top-12 Picks of NWSL Draft
Coming off a great season with a run to the Sweet 16, Santa Clara women’s soccer had two players drafted in the National Women’s Soccer League College Draft on Friday. Senior Julie Johnston went No. 3 overall to the Chicago Red Stars while senior Morgan Marlborough went No. 3 in the second round to FC Kansas City.

Women's Soccer Looks Back on Successful 2013 Season
For the Santa Clara women’s soccer team, the season started and ended in Virginia. But that’s about the only similarity between the No. 20 Broncos who kicked off their season vs. No. 1 North Carolina and the No. 9 Broncos that fell in penalty kicks at No. 4 Virginia Tech in the Sweet 16. The early-season Broncos looked overmatched vs. two of the top teams in the country on the opening weekend but by the end of the year was one of the most dangerous teams in the country. While the season ended in disappointing fashion, the Broncos finished one of the program’s most successful years in the last decade with a No. 7 ranking.

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the last 10 years, Santa Clara women’s soccer finished the 2013 season ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll. The Broncos were the highest West Coast Conference team with Portland finishing at No. 11 and BYU finishing at No. 23.

Santa Clara is catching up with many of the women celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics. Today we look back with former Bronco women's soccer player Rachel Henderson ‘01 (Weber) (RH). Henderson played for Santa Clara from 1997-2000. Her senior year the team lost 2-1 in overtime in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Notre Dame She is now happy and healthy living in Davenport, Iowa. She is a pastor’s wife and mother of three wonderful little kids.

Two Broncos Named All-American, Four Named First Team All-West Region
The same week head coach Jerry Smith was named the 2013 NSCAA West Region Women’s Coach of the Year, two Santa Clara women’s soccer players were named 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-Americans and four were named First Team NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-West Region. Senior Julie Johnston was named first team on both lists while Sofia Huerta was First Team All-Region and Third Team All-American. Seniors Morgan Marlborough and Ellie Rice were honored as All-West selections.

For the third season in a row Julie Johnston of Santa Clara women’s soccer has been named a semi-finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Previous Bronco winners of the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy include Mandy Clemens in 1999 and Aly Wagner in 2002.

Women's Soccer Head Coach Jerry Smith Named 2013 NSCAA West Region Women’s Coach of the Year
Santa Clara women’s soccer head coach Jerry Smith has been named the 2013 NSCAA West Region Women’s Coach of the Year. Smith led the Broncos to a 14-4-2 mark overall and a share of the West Coast Conference title with an 8-1-0 mark in conference action. This is the time Smith has been honored with the award.

Trying to move on to the Elite 8 with a chance to host at Buck Shaw, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer tied No. 4 Virginia Tech 1-1 but the Hokies advanced 3-1 on penalty kicks. The tie ends the Broncos at 16-4-2 overall while the Hokies are 18-4-3.

Women's Soccer to Face Virginia Tech in Sweet 16
Looking to return home to host the Elite 8, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer faces No. 4 Virginia Tech in the Sweet 16 at 10 a.m. Pacific on Sun., Nov. 24. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. On Nov. 22 Santa Clara took down No. 25 Boston University 2-1 to advance to the program’s 13th Sweet 16. The Broncos’ last Sweet 16 trip was in 2009 when they fell to Stanford 1-0 in Palo Alto. The team’s last win in a Sweet 16 game was in 2004 when Santa Clara took down North Carolina 1-0 on the way to the Final Four.

In a physical game against the top defense in the country, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer topped No. 25 Boston University 2-1 to advance to the Sweet 16. The win puts the Broncos at 16-4-1 while Boston ends its season 15-4-4.

Heading across the country for the second round of the NCAA Tournament, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer will face No. 25 Boston University at 11 a.m. Pacific on Fri., Nov. 22 in Blacksburg, Va. on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Broncos took down Cal 2-1 in the first round on Nov. 16 to advance.

Julie Johnston Named WCC Player of the Year, Three Broncos Earn First-Team Honors
Coming off a share of the West Coast Conference title and a bid to the 24th NCAA Tournament in program history, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer was well represented when the conference released the All-WCC teams and individual awards. Julie Johnston was named the Player of the Year while Johnston, Sofia Huerta and Morgan Marlborough were all named All-WCC First Team. Ellie Rice was named All-WCC Second Team while Jordan Jesolva, Julie Vass and Allie Vernon were Honorable Mention. Jesolva and Vass were also named to the All-Freshman Team. Johnston was also named College Sports Madness WCC Player of the Year and was a First Team selection along with Marlborough. Huerta received a Second Team nod.

Women's Soccer Hosts Cal at Buck Shaw in First Round of NCAA Tournament Saturday at 1 PM
After winning a share of the 10th West Coast Conference title in program history, No. 8 Santa Clara women’s soccer will host Cal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sat., Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. This is the third consecutive year the Broncos will host the first round of the NCAA Tournament and the 26th tournament in program history.

In the final regular season game of the season, No. 8 Santa Clara women’s soccer beat Gonzaga by a final of 6-3 to claim a share of its 10th West Coast Conference title. The win puts the Broncos final regular season record at 14-4-1 overall and 8-1-0 in WCC action while Gonzaga finishes at 7-11-1 overall and 3-6-0 in conference play. It is the first WCC championship for the Broncos since 2006.

Seven Women's Soccer Players Recognized by WCC for Academic Success
Proving their dominance on the field with a No. 8 national ranking, seven Santa Clara women's soccer players were honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2013 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team. Senior Morgan Marlborough and redshirt freshman Julie Vass were named to the All-Academic Team while Cali Reis, Ellie Rice, Paige Robertson, Katie Speidel, and Dani Weatherholt were honorable mention.

Alone in first place in the West Coast Conference, No. 8 Santa Clara women's soccer wraps-up the regular season with games on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. at Portland and on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga. The game at Portland will be live on ESPNU. A win at Portland will guarantee the Broncos a share of the WCC title. Two wins on the weekend will give Santa Clara the outright title.

Santa Clara is catching up with many of the women celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics. Today we look back with former Bronco women's soccer player Annessa Patton '11 (AP). In 2010 Patton was named to the All-WCC First Team and the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-West Region Second Team. She was named the league's October Player of the Month in 2010. She was also named All-WCC Honorable Mention in 2009.

Santa Clara women’s soccer added its fifth honored jersey to Buck Shaw on Nov. 3 as the Broncos honored Mandy Clemens and her No. 5 jersey at halftime of the team’s 9-2 win over Pepperdine on senior day. Clemens joins Danielle Slaton, Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne and Aly Wagner as the only honored jerseys.

For the second time this season, Morgan Marlborough was named the West Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Marlborough also won the award for Sept. 12 when she had a hat trick vs. Iowa State in a 5-1 win.

In the final home match of the regular season for the No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer team, the Broncos rally in the second half to beat Pepperdine 9-2. The Broncos now hold a record of 13-3-1 (7-0-0 WCC) and the Waves stand at 9-7-2 (4-4-0 WCC).

Coming off a nine-goal outburst and entering the final home weekend of the regular season, No. 9 Santa Clara women’s soccer broke into the top-10 and hosts LMU on Fri., Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and Pepperdine Sun., Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. Last week the Broncos cruised to a 9-0 win over San Francisco to remain the only unbeaten team in the West Coast Conference and put themselves in a position where they control their own destiny for winning the conference championship. Santa Clara is now 11-3-1 overall and 5-0-0 in conference action and is riding a seven game winning streak.

Riding a six-game winning streak and looking to stay perfect in conference action, No. 11 Santa Clara women’s soccer, tied for first in the West Coast Conference, hosts San Francisco on Sun., Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. in the lone game of the week. Last week the Broncos took down Saint Mary’s 4-0 and Pacific 2-0 on the road to move their conference record to 4-0-0. Overall Santa Clara is 10-3-1 and has lost just once since the opening weekend of the season.

Hitting the road for the first time in a month and a half, No. 18 Santa Clara women’s soccer will play its first road conference games of 2013. The Broncos will face Saint Mary’s on Fri., Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. before heading to Pacific for a 1 p.m. game on Oct. 20. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Tigers joined the West Coast Conference. Last week Santa Clara got off to a 2-0-0 start in WCC action with a 1-0 win over San Diego and a thrilling 2-1 win over BYU.

Santa Clara is catching up with many of the women celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics. Today we look back with former Bronco women's soccer player Brandi Chastain '91 (BC). Chastain is best-known for scoring the winning goal in the 1999 World Cup as well playing soccer for the Broncos from 1989-90. In 1989, she led the team to its first-ever postseason appearance, scoring 10 goals and leading the Broncos into the national semifinals and a final ranking of No. 3 in the nation. She is currently in her fourth season working as a volunteer assistant with head coach Jerry Smith.

After a week off, No. 18 Santa Clara women’s soccer opens West Coast Conference play with two games at Buck Shaw this week. The Broncos take on San Diego on Thurs., Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and No. 22 BYU on Sat. Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Santa Clara finished non-conference play with a record of 6-3-1 after taking down Kansas 3-2 and Cal Poly 4-0. The Broncos enter conference play No. 16 in the RPI.

With the 4-0 win over Cal Poly on Sept. 29, Santa Clara women’s head coach Jerry Smith picked up his 400th career win as a head coach with all the wins coming at Santa Clara. Allie Vernon and her team have come a long way since her first season just five years ago. She started her collegiate career with a four-win season and has watched it grow to a Final Four caliber team. Head Coach Jerry Smith Wins 400th Career Game as Santa Clara Takes Down Cal Poly 4-0
Playing its final non-conference game of the 2013 regular season, No. 20 Santa Clara women’s soccer topped Cal Poly 4-0. The win puts the Broncos final non-conference record at 6-3-1 while the Mustangs are now 4-6-0. The win was head coach Jerry Smith’s 400th career win as a head coach. All 400 wins have come at Santa Clara.

On its final weekend of non-conference play, No. 20 Santa Clara women’s soccer beat Kansas 3-2. The victory puts the Broncos record at 5-3-1 while the Jayhawks are now 5-5-1.

Chatting with Senior Ellie Rice
Senior defender Ellie Rice is very confident in her team’s ability to continue to move up the rankings and compete for the NCAA women’s soccer National Championship. The whole program has worked tirelessly to get their team to the next level. Having proved herself as a solid defender individually, Rice started all 21 games for the Broncos in 2012 and off the field was honored as a part of the West Coast Conference All-Academic team. This year she has played in six matches and looks forward to the matches vs. Kansas (Sept. 27) and Cal Poly (Sept. 29) this weekend.

Women's Soccer Finishes Non-Conference Play with Kansas, Cal Poly
Coming off two double overtime games against top-12 opponents, No. 20 Santa Clara women’s soccer wraps-up non-conference play with games vs. Kansas and Cal Poly this week. The Broncos will face Kansas Fri., Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. and Cal Poly Sun., Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. Last week Santa Clara tied No. 12 Cal 1-1 and fell to No. 2 Stanford 3-2 in double overtime. With an attendance of 3,252, the Stanford game was the 20th largest crowd in women’s soccer history at Buck Shaw. The Broncos are now 4-3-1 on the season with all three losses coming to top-10 teams. Because of the tough schedule, Santa Clara is No. 9 in the RPI.

Riding a four-game winning streak, No. 22 Santa Clara women’s soccer takes on two ranked Pac-12 foes this week at Buck Shaw. The Broncos host No. 12 Cal on Thurs., Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. and No. 2 Stanford at 7 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 22. Santa Clara’s last win over a top-5 team was in 2011 when the Broncos topped No. 3 Pepperdine at home. The Stanford game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and called by Melissa Lee and Julie Foudy.

Following her first hat trick as a Bronco, Morgan Marlborough of women’s soccer was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Santa Clara topped Iowa State 5-1 in its lone game of the week on Sept. 12 to move to 4-2-0.

Coming off a big win against a top-20 team, Santa Clara women’s soccer plays just one game for the second consecutive week. The Broncos welcome Iowa State to the Mission Campus on Thurs., Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Santa Clara’s 1-0 win over Maryland on Sept. 6 put the Broncos at 3-2-0 in 2013. Women's Soccer Tabbed to Win WCC; Two Players Honored on Preseason All-WCC Team
With high hopes for the 2013 season, Santa Clara women’s soccer was picked to win the always competitive West Coast Conference by the leagues coaches on Tuesday. The No. 16 Broncos picked up nine of 10 first place votes with the other vote going to Portland. Julie Johnston and Sofia Huerta were also named to the preseason All-WCC Team.

For the second consecutive season the Broncos’ regular season schedule will open against the defending national champion. The Broncos will face off vs. North Carolina at the University of Virginia Tournament on Aug. 23, after facing Stanford to open the 2012 season.

Two Broncos Called to U-20 National Team Camp
Continuing to put forth top-notch U-20 players, Santa Clara’s sophomores Dani Weatherholt and Andi Tostanoski are two of the 27 players called to the U-20 camp by U.S. head coach Michelle French. The camp will take place from July 2-11 at the University of Portland. The U.S. is preparing to play qualifying matches to reach to 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The University of the Pacific formally joins the WCC on Monday and will field a team in 10 of the Conference's 14 sponsored sports – including softball, which will be played under the West Coast Conference banner for the first time in 2014.

Former Broncos Continue to Find Success
Santa Clara University has long been known for its success on the soccer field and is the only school in NCAA history to have both its men’s and women’s programs ranked No. 1 simultaneously. From WCC titles to NCAA Championships to Final Four appearances, the Broncos have left their impact on the country and possibly the world. Santa Clara’s premier program was even highlighted by Hollywood in the 2002 movie Bend It Like Beckham, as the premier school for Keira Knightley’s character to attend.

Looking to make a run to the program’s 11th Final Four, Santa Clara women’s soccer released its 2013 schedule on Thursday. The Broncos have scheduled top opponents both at home and on the road to prepare the team for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Santa Clara will play 11 games against opponents that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including defending national champion North Carolina.
