Women's Golf Completes Runner-Up Finish at Cal Poly

Nov. 8, 2005

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's golf team capped their Fall season Tuesday afternoon a momentum-building runner-up performance in the Cal Poly Invitational amid wet conditions at Cypress Ridge GC.

Megan Stoddart led the Broncos' A team Tuesday as she shot a 73 to bring her two-round total to 150, good for seventh-place. A transfer from Hawaii, Stoddart has already bagged an individual tournament title, a top-20 and a top-10 finish in her first three starts as a Bronco.

Candice Palmer and Jenny Nelson followed up with a 78 and 79 Tuesday, while Corey Utsurogi and Samantha Trask carded scores of 80 and 83, respectively.

"We were striking the ball really well today, and the fact that we were only five shots out and in the final group of the day, that's going to build our confidence and give us a taste of wanting to win," said head coach Polly Schulze. "Finishing second out of 14 teams is certainly something to be proud of and that's just going to carry over into the spring season."

For Santa Clara's "B" team, Hilaire Fouts paced the group with an 83 Tuesday as Eriko Sato and Ella Sanman each shot 85 for the day. Jennifer Sun and Whitney Saulsberry respectively concluded their season debuts with scores of 89 and 91.

The Broncos will take a three-month break from competition before returning in February to begin the Spring season. From February 13-14 Santa Clara will compete in the UC Riverside Invitational from Beaumont, Calif.
