Women's Golf in Ninth at Colby Classic
March 26, 2001 CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. - Cal State Northridge leads the University of Denver by one stroke after the first round of the Colby Classic, held at the at Rancho Caņada Golf Club in Carmel Valley this afternoon. Host Santa Clara currently sits in ninth place. The Matadors' Beth Allen leads all individuals after carding a one-over-par 72 on the 5,832-yard East Course. She leads Denver's Christine Anast by three strokes. Three players, including one each from CS Northridge and Denver, are tied at 76. As a team, CS Northridge carded a 308, 24 strokes over par. Denver is in second one stroke back, while Western New Mexico is in third with a 321. One stroke farther back is Sacramento State at 322 while CS San Marcos rounds out the top five, at 332. Santa Clara was led by Jessica Abbott's 83. Katie Johnson recorded a career-high 88, including a birdie on the 14th hole, when she chipped in from 75 yards out on the 352-yard par four. The final round of the Colby Classic moves to the West Course will begin tomorrow with tee times at 8 a.m.
