Bronco Women Shoot Their Way to Second

BEAUMONT, Calif.- In the midst of windy conditions that tasked every golfer on the course, the Santa Clara women's golf team kept their composure and braved the elements in the first round of the UC Riverside Lady Braveheart Classic Monday. With a first-round team score of 324, the Broncos ended the day in second place, nine shots back of leader San Diego State. Candice Palmer led the Bronco women with an opening round six-over 78 at the Oak Valley Golf Club, a score good for third place in the individual competition. Palmer will head into tomorrow's second round only two strokes off the pace of Day One co-leaders Heather MacRae and Maki Kamimura of San Diego State. Corey Utsurogi's 80 is also a top-ten worthy score, putting her in sixth place. Samantha Trask and Megan Stoddart each carded an 83 and an 85 from Ella Sanman rounded out the Santa Clara quintet. Hilaire Fouts, competing as an individual, shot a first-round score of 90. "I'm most happy about the girls staying tough mentally in the face of the conditions today," said head coach Polly Schulze. "They never gave up at any time. Sitting in second place heading into tomorrow's final round is a good position for us to be in. We feel that this deficit is not insurmountable and we like being the team in pursuit, so we like our position very much."
San Diego State leads team play with a score of 315, while UC Davis sits in third place, one stroke behind the Broncos. Final-round action commences Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. |
