ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Rebounding from a tough first round, Santa Clara junior Kristin Le shot an even-par 72 in today's second round to find herself in a battle for one of the top three individual qualifier spots at the Albuquerque Regional of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship.
Final round play begins Wednesday morning on the 6,637-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course.
Le, the second women's golfer in Santa Clara history to qualify for the NCAA Championship, was consistent on Tuesday, recording 14 pars for a tournament total of 25, the fifth-best amount among the 96-player field. Only 18 golfers posted better rounds than Le on Tuesday.
"Kristin played great," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "She stuck to our game plan and committed to each shot. She was more aggressive today. I'm very proud of her."
One of six individuals competing at the regional, Le needs to finish among the top-three to advance to the NCAA Championship final and there is ground to make up on Wednesday.
Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg is at 3-under 141 with Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan one shot back at 142. In third among individual qualifiers is Missouri's Jess Yuen at 3-over 147. Le is 5-shots back of Yuen at 8-over 152.
"Our game plan will be similar to that of today," Kelly noted. "But we are going to try to go for two of the par-5's in two shots."
The six lowest scoring teams and three lowest individuals from each of the four regional events will advance to the NCAA Championship final, to be held May 19-24 in Sugar Grove, Ill.
