PROVO, Utah – Juniors Kristin Le and Kyleigh Moreno both shot a 2-over 74 to tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard, and Santa Clara women's golf scored a 309 team score for a fifth place finish after the first round of the WCC Championship, contested on the Riverside Country Club course in Provo.

Playing in her first WCC Tournament, Moreno was at the top of the leaderboard until she bogeyed her final two holes. Le also bogeyed her final hole and the teammates dropped into a four-way tie for eighth, three shots behind leader Hira Naveed of Pepperdine, who was the only player to score under par in the first round.

"Kyleigh and Kristine played really well today," head coach Krystal Kelly said.

It was a struggle for the rest of the team. Senior Annie Freman carded an 8-over 80 for 20th place while freshman Chloe Wong and junior Isabella Salant tied for 21st at 9-over 81.

"We didn't score great, but we aren't out of it," Kelly stated. "Tomorrow we need to hit more greens and make more putts. I'm confident we'll play well."

The Broncos will enter the second round just two shots behind third-place San Francisco. Pepperdine, which won 14 consecutive team titles until being dethroned by BYU last season, leads the pack at 3-over 291. The Cougars are five shots back at 296.

Second round action on the 6,420-yard layout tees off at 8:20 a.m. Live scoring is available at
