MARICOPA, Ariz. – Junior Kristin Le and senior Annie Freman tied for seventh place on the individual leaderboard, leading Santa Clara women's golf to a fifth-place finish at the 18-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, completed Friday at the 6,131-yard, par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
Freman shot a 3-over 75 and Le a 4-over 76 in Friday's final round, ending the tournament tied for seventh with Eastern Washington's Madalyn Ardueser at 4-over 220. Nevada's Kaitlin Collom won the tie-breaker over Sacramento State's Julia Becker after each scored a 3-under 213 in regulation play.
It was Freman's 27th career top-10 finish while Le earned her seventh this season and the 18th of her career.
The Broncos entered the final round in fifth place and failed to make up ground on the team leaderboard with their 300 round. Santa Clara ended the tournament with an 895 total, 21 strokes behind titlist UC Irvine.
"Overall we played well, but we should have scored better," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "We made a lot of birdies in this tournament, now we just need to minimize the bogeys."
Junior Isabella Salant had the best score of the final round for the Broncos with a 1-over 73. She moved up 14 spots on the leaderboard to place in a tie for 41st at 13-over 229.
Freshman Chloe Wong matched her career-low with a first round 2-over 74 and equaled her best 54-hole score with an 11-over 227. She tied for 34th.
The Broncos will take two weeks to prepare for the WCC tournament, which gets underway at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah on April 20. "We have a great game plan heading into the WCC Championship," Kelly noted. "It's nice to have some good momentum going into our final tournament of the season."
