Women’s Golf In Fourth Place; Freman Tied For Third After First Day Of Cowgirl Classic
MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Santa Clara women's golf team is in fourth place, just seven shots off the lead and freshman Annie Freman is tied for third place on the individual leaderboard after the first 36 holes of the 20-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, played today at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
The Broncos were one of just two teams to score below 300 in the first round with their 298 and shot a second round 302 to finish the day at 600 (+24). It was Santa Clara's second sub-300 round of the Spring and sixth of the season. New Mexico State scored below 300 in both rounds with a 297 and 298 to lead the field by five shots over Boise State and six shots ahead of Lamar.
Freman and sophomore Monique Riley are both among the top-10 heading into Tuesday's final round. Freman scored an even-par 72 over the opening 18 holes and was 2-over in the second round to tie with a pair of golfers for third place at 146 (+2), five shots off the lead.
Looking for her first career top-10 finish, Riley matched her career-best with a second round 2-over 74 after scoring a first round 75 to place in a tie for 10th at 5-over 149.
Meghan Shain carded identical rounds of 76 to finish in a tie for 22nd place at 8-over 152 while Kaci McCartan tied for 35th with rounds of 75 and 79 for a 10-over 154. Senior Taylor Camany had a two-shot improvement over her first round with a second round 78 and ended the day at 158 (+14).
With rounds of 71 and 70, New Mexico State's Camille Orito is the only under-par player and leads the pack with her 3-under 141, three shots better than Samantha Martin of Boise State.
Looking to close out their 2013-14 regular season with their sixth top-5 finish in 10 events, the Broncos enter Tuesday's final round six shots ahead of sixth-place Sacramento State.
