SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team closes out its regular season competing in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the 6,231-yard, par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
The field for the eighth annual event features 20 teams and 108 golfers with 36-holes played on Monday and a single 18-hole round wraps up the event on Tuesday. Santa Clara, playing with Portland State, New Mexico State and Montana, begins play Monday on the fifth through eighth holes.
"Overall I'm real happy with the spring season," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "The team has come together really well and we're putting together a lot of really good scores."
Coming off her third top-10 finish of the season, sophomore Meghan Shain was the squad's top individual performer for the first time in her career when she tied for 16th place at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on March 26. Shain also drained a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole during the event's final round to finish at 9-over 225.
Freshman Annie Freman has had a stellar first year playing all 25 rounds in nine events and posting the team's best stroke average at 74.28. Freman also has two individual titles and has placed among the top-10 seven times.
Junior Kaci McCartan is the only other player to compete in every round and her 76.44 average is second-best on the team. McCartan claimed medalist honors for the first time in her career at the Boise State Invitational last September and has four top-10 finishes.
Following the Cowgirl Classic, the Broncos will prepare for the West Coast Conference Championship, which takes place at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. on April 14-16.
"This week is a good warm up for conference," Kelly noted. "It's a good field with a lot of teams and our last 36-18, so it'll definitely be a good prep for the WCC Championship."
