Freman Captures Individual Title; Women’s Golf Places Fourth At Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Freshman Annie Freman carded a career-low round of 4-under-par 69 to earn her second consecutive tournament title and the Santa Clara women's golf team claimed its fourth top-five finish of the fall season with a fourth-place standing at the 11-team Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational completed today at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Freman was the only player to shoot under par with a two-round total of 4-under 142 and won the tournament by four shots over Cal Poly's Jamie Corr and Seattle's Juhee Lee, who both finished at 146.

With a tournament-best 12 birdies, Freman matched Kaci McCartan for the squad's lowest-round of the season and tied Courtney Dimpel ('02-'05) for the second-most tournament wins in program history with two, behind only Miki Ueoka, who won four titles from 2008-2011.

Freman earned her first career victory in a sudden-death playoff over teammate Sadie Strain in last week's Colby Invitational.

The Broncos scored a final round 310, an 8-shot improvement over yesterday's first round score, and ended in fourth place with a 628 total, four shots behind UC Riverside. Cal Poly's A team fired a 298 today for a 608 total to win the tournament by eight shots over Seattle (616).

Sophomore Ashley Noda carded a final round 78 after yesterday's 82 to climb into a tie for 29th with a 160 (+14) and senior Taylor Camany was three shots better with today's 81 for a total of 165 to tie for 45th. Strain scored rounds of 81 and 82 to tie for 38th at 163 while McCartan tied for 43rd place after identical rounds of 82.

All nine players on the Broncos' roster competed in the event with Meghan Shain, Casey Briggs, Monique Riley and Brooke Stephens playing as individuals.

Shain recorded the second-lowest score for Santa Clara and equaled a career-best with a seventh-place finish after a two-round total of 3-over 149. Casey Briggs (81, 81) and Monique Riley (82, 80) tied for 36th place at 162 and Stephens finished with a 173 in 57th place.

Santa Clara's impressive fall season included a pair of team titles, three individual champions and 11 individual top-10 finishes in their six events. The team will begin its spring season in late February at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational.
