Women's Golf Places 14th After Final Round 302 at Cowgirl Classic
Chandler, Ariz. – The Santa Clara women's golf team had the fourth-best score in the final round of the 19-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz., firing a 302 to finish the tournament in 14th place with a three-day total of 958. The Broncos improved their team score by 31 strokes from the opening round when playing conditions were treacherous.
"I'm so proud of my team," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "After two challenging rounds they were real solid today. Conditions were still challenging with the wind, but course management and club selection were much better."
Junior Taylor Camany matched her best round of the year shooting a team-best 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday, 18 shots better than her first round. She climbed into a tie for 71st with a three round total of 246. "Taylor really stepped up today," Kelly said. "It was exciting to watch her out there."
Senior Balbina Guajardo had her sixth top-20 finish of the year placing in a tie for 12th after shooting a final round 3-over 75, her best round of the tournament. She ended with a three-round total of 230 (+14). "Balbina had a great tournament finish," Kelly noted. "She played real steady in tough conditions, finishing with three amazing up and downs on [holes] seven, eight and nine to finish at 75."
Guajardo finished 16 shots behind tournament winner Hayley Young of Boise State, the only player to finish under par with a 2-under 214. Boise State also captured the team title with rounds of 307, 301 and 293 for a 901 total, 19 stroked better than runner-up Xavier.
Freshman Ashley Noda also fired a final round 75 to finish in a 52nd place tie with a three-day total of 242 (+26) and Meghan Shain had a 79 to finish one shot behind Noda in a tie for 60th with a total of 243. "Ashley and Meghan both played well, rounding out our team score of 302," Kelly stated.
After improving their score in each of the three rounds at the Cowgirl Classic, the Broncos will now prepare for the West Coast Conference Championship, coming up on April 15-17 at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. "Overall today's round will give us some extra confidence going into the WCC Championship," Kelly quipped.
