PALO ALTO, Calif. – Santa Clara University's women's golf team had three players shoot in the 70's, and as a team the Broncos out-played local league rival San Francisco on the first day of action at the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford.
In a two-round, two-day event held at the Stanford Golf Course, an outstanding field of 13 teams teed it up Saturday morning. The Broncos finished the opening round 12th out of 13, edging USF by one shot, with a collective team score of 317.
Freshman Ashley Noda (Roseville, Calif. / St. Francis) - who was tied as SCU's top finisher earlier this week in Southern California - posted a 77 Saturday to once again pace the Broncos as the team's top scorer. Senior All-West Coast Conference pick Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey) and freshman Sadie Strain (Arbuckle, Calif. / Christian Brothers) carded opening-round scores of 79.
Cal (285) and Stanford (289) will go into Sunday's final round a top the team leaderboard. The field at the Peg Barnard Invitational is loaded with top 100 programs. San Jose State's Megan Osland was 3-under par, at 68, and is the individual leader heading into the final 18 holes.
