Fresno State Leads Santa Clara's Colby Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Fresno State University leads the SCU Colby Invitational by three strokes over UC Riverside after the first round of play at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose.

The tournament that is hosted by Santa Clara University will wrap up with an 18-hole second round tomorrow, Tuesday.

Santa Clara junior Tamara Surtees is tied for third overall after shooting a first round 75.  The Bronco's top player, Miki Ueoka, shot a four over 76 and is tied for sixth.  The Broncos as a team are in fifth place out of seven teams with a score of 315.

"We are certainly disappointed as to where we stand as a team," said Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze. "This is not the position that we anticipated being in after round one but that will not stop us from competing tomorrow and moving up the leaderboard. Nine shots may seem like a lot but they can be erased very quickly on this course. We'll play our hardest and see what happens at the end of the day.

"The good news is that both Tamara Surtees and Miki Ueoka are both in very close proximity to the lead so it will be exciting to see what happens there. I know it would mean so much to both of them to win our home event. For Miki it would be special with this being her senior year and this would be Tamara's first collegiate win. I am excited for both of them to be in such a great position."
