The Santa Clara women's golf team will kick off their 2007-08 season Monday, October 8th at the Boise State Bronco Invitational. The team last year finished fourth at the WCC Championships and will look to improve upon that this year with a strong group of experienced veterans as well as a talented group of newcomers.
After qualifying this week, the Broncos have a squad ready to take to Boise. Lone senior Corey Utsurogi and super sophomore Jamie Nonaka played in 16 combined tournaments last year and will provide the experience. Sophomore Katherine Suarez and freshmen Miki Ueoka and Katie Sharpe will all be playing in their first collegiate tournament, but that doesn't mean they aren't used to the competition. "All three have played at a high level as juniors and all of them have played on a national stage so I have no doubts that they will be fine," said head coach Polly Schulze.
"We have a very deep team this year, meaning the talent level runs deep. This is what we have been working toward is having internal competition from top to bottom so that it pushes the girls and inspires them to keep getting better in order to either hold their position on the team or to better their position on the team," said Schulze. "When you have nine girls on a team and only five travel, it can get fairly competitive from within."
The team is excited to finally hit the road and begin competition and see where they are in their progress. With a group of sophomores and freshmen that Schulze calls "the best we've ever had," and a senior class four strong to guide the team, this season looks promising. "Going in to my 8th year at SCU I have seen so many sports come on strong and our athletic department in general gets better and more competitive each year," said Schulze. "Women's Golf is pumped to add to the success of Santa Clara Athletics and we are proud to call ourselves Broncos."
The Boise State Bronco Invitational is all day Monday and then the final round will be played on Tuesday. Don't forget to check out Corey's Bronco Blog to get the insider information on the team this year.
