CARMEL, Calif. - The UC Riverside women's golf team is in first place after opening-day action at the 10th annual Santa Clara University Colby Invitational, hosted at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel. The host Broncos carded a 30-over-par 314 in today's action and are in third place out of 14 teams after the first round of play, 12 strokes off the lead.
Santa Clara's Red team was led by Courtney Dimpel-Composti and Candice Palmer, who both carded 77s. Samantha Trask added a 79 and Corey Utsurogi added an 81. Jenny Nelson rounded out the team score with an 88.
The Santa Clara White squad finished with a 325 team score and was led by freshman Stephanie Cope's 75. Eriko Sato added a 79 and Paige Wilson posted an 83. Jennifer Sun carded an 88 and Whitney Saulsberry rounded out the team score with an 89.
Bronco newcomer Hilaire Fouts competed as an individual and finished with an 89.
UC Riverside shot an opening-round 302 and is in the lead after playing a round with overcast skies. Northern Colorado is in second place at 311. Gonzaga (317) and Eastern Washington (318) follow the Broncos to round out the top five.
The Highlanders' Courtney O'Neill leads all individuals after carding a one-over-par 72. Highlander teammate LeAnh Nguyen, Sacramento State's Sarah Kuykendall and British Columbia's Jana Haggins share second, as each carded three-over 74s. Thee players follow closely after carding 75s.
The teams are playing two courses. Monday's action as on the East Course, a par-71, 5,812 yard layout. Tuesday's round will be on the West Course, which plays 5,947 yards, a par 72. The final round of this 36-hole event will tee off Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. on the first and 10th tees.
