Women's Golf in 12th at Bay Area Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif. -
The Santa Clara University women's golf team opened the spring season at the ninth annual Bay Area Classic, hosted at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge in San Jose. The Broncos carded a 57-over-par 345 in today's action and are in 12th place out of 13 teams after the first round of play.
Samantha Trask led the Broncos with a 40-44--84 in today's round and is currently tied for 35th place. Stephanie Cope and Jenny Nelson are just two strokes behind Trask, tied for 44th after both carded 86s. Corey Utsurogi is tied for 58th with an 89 and Whitney Saulsberry was in at 100, for 65th place.
Fresno State shot an opening-round 310 and is in the lead after a blustery day of play. Hawaii and the co-host Dons share second place at 318, and co-host San Jose State is in fourth at 320. BYU rounds out the top five with a 322.
BYU's Rachel Newren and Katie Davidson of Ole Miss top the leaderboard with two-over 74s. The Spartans' Johanna Lundberg and Kristin Nichols of USF are in third after carding 75s.
The par-72 course is playing at 6,095 yards for the event. The final round of this 36-hole event will tee off Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
The 2005 edition of the Bay Area Classic boasts a solid field, highlighted by four teams ranked in GolfWeek's national top 50: No. 36 UC Irvine, No. 42 BYU, No. 45 San Francisco and No. 48 San Jose State. Fresno State's Laura Luethke is the top-ranked player in the field, rated 57th.
