SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men and women's crew completed day one at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif. Day one was comprised of heats to determine placing teams in slots for Sunday's championships races.
The men's varsity eight is participating in the top level of the Crew Classic for the first time in school history. In the Copley Cup Heat A the Broncos finished fourth in the heat that included two teams ranked in the top-10. No. 2 Washington won the heat, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:18.2, just over one full second ahead of No. 7 Stanford. The Broncos finished in a time of 6:40.79, five seconds behind UC Davis and nearly 13 full seconds ahead of Washington State.
The men's novice eight competed in heat B of their category, finishing fourth behind Cal, UC San Diego and Colorado. The Broncos crossed the finish line in a time of 7:15.01, 16 seconds ahead of UCLA, 18 ahead of San Diego State and 20 seconds ahead of Arizona State.
The junior varsity men's eight raced in heat A of its division, finishing fifth out of six teams, just two seconds behind UC Irvine in a time of 7:16.57. Washington won the heat followed by Oregon State, Minnesota and UCI. San Diego State finished sixth in the heat with a time of 8:18.10.
The women's varsity eight is participating in the Cal Cup and raced in heat B Saturday morning. The Broncos finished sixth out of seven teams in a very competitive race. Louisville won the heat in a time of 7:19.6, ahead of West Virginia, UMass, Georgetown, Temple, Santa Clara and Southern Oregon. The Broncos crossed the finish line in a time of 7:52.26, 47 seconds ahead of Southern Oregon.
The women's junior varsity eight raced in heat B of its division, finishing fifth out of seven teams, crossing the finish line in a time of 8:25.39, 10 seconds ahead of SMU and Loyola. USC won the heat in a time of 7:35.8, followed by Minnesota, Kansas State and Sacramento State.
