Broncos Set Commissioner's Honor Roll Record for Second Straight Year
The West Coast Conference announced its 13th annual Commissioner's Honor Roll Tuesday, and 141 Santa Clara Broncos were recognized with honors for their athletic success and academic excellence. Santa Clara had 18 student-athletes receive gold honors (3.75-4.00 GPA) and 33 student-athletes receive silver honors (3.50-3.74 GPA). The Broncos set a new record of student athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, breaking the previous mark of 133 in the 2012-13 school year.

Meet Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Bianca Ziemann
Bianca Ziemann enters her first season as an assistant coach at Santa Clara in 2014-15. She spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Oregon. Ziemann first joined the Ducks for the 2012-13 season after accumulating four seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels since playing professionally in Europe.

Toriano Towns enters his first season as an assistant coach at Santa Clara in 2014-15. He spent the last five seasons as associate head coach for Southern Utah. Towns served as SUU’s recruiting and defensive coordinator, assisted with the planning of practice sessions, conditioning, scouting, and also worked with the Thunderbird post players.

Santa Clara Names JR Payne As Ninth Head Women's Basketball Coach
After leading Southern Utah University to a school-record 23 wins this season and advancing to the national postseason for the first time in school history, Santa Clara University is thrilled to announce it has hired JR Payne as the Broncos ninth head women’s basketball coach on Sunday. Payne has been the head coach at Southern Utah for the past five seasons and prior to that, Payne was an assistant coach on the Mission campus in 2008-09. An All-WCC point guard who graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1999, Payne has also served as an assistant coach at Boise State and Gonzaga.

Women's Basketball's Season Ends with Loss to Pepperdine in WCC Tournament
In the opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament from The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Santa Clara women’s basketball fell to Pepperdine by a final of 80-74. The loss ends the Broncos season at 10-20 overall and 6-12 in WCC action while the Waves are now 6-24 overall and 1-17 in conference play.

With the regular season in the rearview mirror, Santa Clara women’s basketball heads to Las Vegas for the West Coast Conference Tournament. The Broncos will face Pepperdine at 12 p.m. on Thurs., March 6 at the Orleans Arena. The Broncos are the No. 7 seed with an overall record of 10-19 and a 6-12 mark in WCC play while Pepperdine is the 10th seed with an overall record of 5-24 and a WCC record of 1-17. The matchup will be broadcast live on BYUtv and TheW.tv and will be called by Spencer Linton and Kristen Kozlowski. The winner will advance to play second-seeded BYU Fri., March 7 at 2 p.m. with the same broadcast schedule.

Nici Gilday Named Women's Basketball Player of the Week
After a record-setting week, Nici Gilday of Santa Clara women’s basketball was named the West Coast Conference Player of the week. Gilday scored a program-best 40 points vs. LMU on Feb. 27 and followed it up with 22 vs. Pepperdine on March 1.

Getting set to finish the regular season, Santa Clara women’s basketball hosts LMU Thurs., Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. and Pepperdine Sat., March 1 at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. Last week the Broncos fell at Pacific before upsetting Saint Mary’s 89-83 on the road. The split has Santa Clara at 9-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

Women's Basketball Goes on the Road to Take Down Saint Mary's
Wrapping-up the regular season road portion of its schedule, Santa Clara women’s basketball knocked off Saint Mary’s by a final of 89-83. This was the first win for Santa Clara vs. Saint Mary’s since an 82-55 win at the WCC Tournament in 2009. It was the first regular season win vs. the Gaels since an 84-71 win in Moraga on Jan. 7, 2007. It was also the first time head coach Jennifer Mountain or any of the current players have topped Saint Mary’s. The win puts the Broncos at 9-18 overall and 5-11 in WCC action while the Gaels are now 20-7 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Bruno and Choppelas to Have Jerseys Honored at Halftime of San Diego Game Saturday
At halftime of the San Diego game at 2 p.m. on Sat. Feb. 8, Santa Clara will honor the jerseys of two Bronco greats in Caren Choppelas Horstmeyer '84 and Liz Bruno '82. Bruno is the only women's basketball player in Santa Clara history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Choppelas finished her time at Santa Clara No. 1 on the all-time scoring list and currently sits at No. 3. She was also the head coach of the Broncos from 1988-2000 and led the team to the 1991 WNIT title.

Santa Clara Women's Basketball Announces Four Signees for 2014 Class
With five freshmen expected to play a big role in 2013-14, Santa Clara women’s basketball head coach Jennifer Mountain announced her recruiting class for the 2014-15 season. Four players from four states will be joining the Broncos next year after signing NLI’s.

Five Freshmen of Women's Basketball Give Fans a Tour of the Dorms
With the season underway. Santa Clara women’s basketball has welcomed five freshmen to the 2013-14 squad. Jo Paine, Montana Walters, Marie Bertholdt, Taylor Williams and Beth Carlson were a highly touted recruiting class and all five saw action in the two Santa Clara exhibition games. Paine and Walters started the season-opener while Bertholdt came off the bench.

Women's Basketball Opens Home Schedule vs. San Jose State, UC Riverside
Opening its home slate for the 2013-14 season, Santa Clara women’s basketball hosts local rival San Jose State Tues., Nov. 12 and on Sun., Nov. 17 Santa Clara welcomes UC Riverside to the Leavey Center at 2 p.m. Santa Clara will be collecting donations for the Red Cross/Typhoon Haiyan Efforts during both the men’s and women’s games vs. San Jose State on Tuesday.

Santa Clara Drops High-Scoring Affair to San Jose State
In a matchup of two up-tempo teams, Santa Clara women’s basketball fell to San Jose State by a final of 97-93. The loss puts the Broncos at 0-2 overall while the Spartans are now 2-0. The 93 points for Santa Clara was the most since a 96-76 win at Sacramento State on Dec. 22, 2011. This was the lowest offensive output for San Jose State this season.

Looking to start the 2013-14 season on the right foot, Santa Clara women’s basketball hits the road to face UNLV in the regular season opener for both teams. The Broncos beat Sonoma State 81-47 and Humboldt State 94-68 in a pair of exhibition games to start the season over the weekend.

Women's Basketball Opens 2013-14 with Pair of Exhibition Games
Entering the season with high expectations, Santa Clara women’s basketball will open the season with a pair of exhibition games at the Leavey Center. The Broncos will face Sonoma State at 7 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 1 and Humboldt State at 2 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 3. BACK IN MY DAY: Liz Bruno '82 Looks Back As Part of the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics
Santa Clara is catching up with many of the women celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics. Today we look back with former Bronco women's basketball player Liz Bruno ‘82. Bruno owns the career mark for rebounds as a Bronco with 1,218 and is No. 16 on the Santa Clara all-time scoring list with 1,081 points. She is also the leader in free throw attempts with 549 while placing fourth in makes with 331. Bruno owns the top two single season rebounding seasons in 1980-81 and 1981-82.

Sam Farber and Doug Greenwald to Share Play-by-Play Duties for Women's Basketball
With the 2013-14 season fast approaching, Santa Clara women’s basketball has hired Doug Greenwald and Sam Farber to share radio play-by-play duties. Greenwald will call 22 games while Farber will call nine, including the West Coast Conference Tournament from March 6-11, 2014.

Broncos Continue to Give Back to the Community
Santa Clara women’s basketball is always near the top of Bronco athletics in terms of community service. The basketball team spends hours in the community trying to make a difference. One of the major groups the Broncos work with is the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) and On Oct. 7 four players went to Rosemary Elementary School to work with a group of young girls.

With students back on campus, Santa Clara women’s basketball held its first official practice of the 2013-14 season this week. Head coach Jennifer Mountain, in her sixth season leading the Broncos, welcomed in five freshmen as well as making two changes to her coaching staff. Amanda Brown was promoted from Director of Basketball Operations to assistant coach and Angie Bjorklund was hired as the D.B.O.

Ruta Zurauskyte at Full-Strength Heading Into Senior Campaign
The pieces had finally started to fall into place for Ruta Zurauskyte in late 2011. After two frustrating seasons marked by injury and inaction, Zurauskyte dazzled early in her junior season, including a 33-point, 13-rebound masterpiece against UC Irvine. On Dec. 15th of that year, Zurauskyte would tear her ACL in practice, derailing the breakout season she’d been working for.

Amanda Brown Promoted to Assistant Coach, Angie Bjorklund Hired as Director of Operations for Women's Basketball
Head coach Jennifer Mountain, entering her sixth year leading Santa Clara women’s basketball, announced a promotion and a new addition to her staff on Tuesday. Amanda Brown was promoted to assistant coach after serving as Director of Basketball Operations for the last three seasons. Angie Bjorklund was hired to replace Brown as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Santa Clara women’s basketball announced its 2013-14 schedule on Thursday. The Broncos will play two exhibition games at home before opening the regular season on Nov. 8 on the road. Nov. 12 will be the opener at the Leavey Center and conference action begins Dec. 30.

Ashley Armstrong Awarded West Coast Conference Female Postgraduate Scholarship
Already named Valedictorian for the class of 2013, the academic awards continue to roll in for Ashley Armstrong of Santa Clara women’s basketball as she was awarded the West Coast Conference Female Postgraduate Scholarship. This will be the 10th year the award has been handed out and at least one Bronco has been honored six times, including three years in a row. Armstrong will graduate in June with a major in Anthropology and minors in Economics and International Business while posting a 3.9 GPA. Armstrong will begin her Masters of Philosophy in the fall at Cambridge.
