SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Elizabeth Doran registered a game-high 21 points to lead the Santa Clara women's basketball team to an 83-61 triumph over Cal State Monterey Bay Wednesday night at the Leavey Center. The game was the Broncos first of two preseason exhibition contests.
Santa Clara jumped to a 5-0 start on a jumper from Walker and a three-pointer from Doran. The Broncos continued to hold the lead throughout the first half and took a 21-point edge, 30-9, on a three-point shot from freshman Nichole Gall. SCU then climbed to a 35-11 score on successful free throws from senior Chandice Cronk and a three point field goal from freshman Rhianna Faithfull. Yet, the Otters capitalized on points from the charity stripe to lessen the gap. With 16 seconds left on the clock, Faithfull struck again, ending the first half, 53-33.
CSUMB started off the second half with a two-points from Britnea Moore, but back-to-back baskets from Doran, who shot 5-for-5 in the half, kept the momentum running for the Broncos. Although the Otters continued to fight, the closest they would get for the remainder of the game was within 18 points. Just under the eight minute mark, Gall registered a successful trey that put the Broncos up 75-50. Two minutes later, SCU compiled its largest lead of the contest, 26 points, on a solid jumper from Doran. Three straight points from redshirt junior Sara Majors gave Santa Clara a final score of 83-61.
For the Otters, Moore and Dana Andrews collected 18 points each, while Alma Lopez added 14 and registered a game-high four steals.
The Broncos return to action in their final exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 4, against the Gators of San Francisco State. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Leavey Center.
