MORAGA, Calif.- Freshman point guard Corrie Mizusawa scored a career-high 17 points to lead St. Mary's to a 79-76 win over Santa Clara on Friday night.
The win vaulted the Gaels (14-2, 3-0) into first place in the West Coast Conference, while the Broncos (11-4, 2-1) dropped one game off the pace.
Mizusawa, whose last-minute three-pointer gave St. Mary's its first lead of the second half, also had six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Katie Davis scored 16 points for the Gaels and Jermisha Dosty had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Broncos led by nine points with 7:07 remaining, and by five with 1:35 left, but the Gaels ran off nine points in the next 1:32 to pull out the victory. Davis banked in a three-pointer from the side with 1:22 showing that cut the lead to two, and after a Jerkisha Dosty free throw, Mizusawa buried her three to give the Gaels a lead they never lost.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 19-8 lead with 13:34 left in the first half, but the Broncos battled back to tie the game at 27. St. Mary's built another lead, but Santa Clara went into the locker room even at 41.
