Men's Water Polo Splits a Pair of Matches at the Aggie Shootout

Oct. 30, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team split a pair of contests at the Aggie Shootout in Davis, Calif. on Saturday. The Broncos defeated Air Force before falling to UC Davis in the afternoon. After the day's matches, SCU is 9-16 on the year.

In the morning match, eight different Broncos scored in 9-6 victory over 17th-ranked Air Force. The win marks SCU's first victory over Air Force in four years.

"The win over Air Force might have been our best game of the season, so far," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Our offense was quick, with our 6-on-5 attack playing well. We also had very balanced and sound scoring."

Charlie Moore found the back of the net twice, while seven other Broncos scored in the contest. Grant Allison, Austin Brizgys, Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz, Thomas Kelly, Matthew Martin, Chris Parolin and Kevin Starry all posted a goal in the match.

Parolin led the team, earning three kick-outs and drawing a four-meter shot. Allison also drew three ejections, while Flanagan-De la Hoz had two assists and drew another four-meter shot.

Defensively, goalkeeper Peter Moore recorded 11 blocks in the cage. Starry also played strong defense in the field with two steals.

In the afternoon, the Broncos once again had a balanced offensive attack as six different players scored in the 11-7 loss.

"We played better against Davis today than we did earlier in the season," said Wilbur. "We did not play our best though. We will have to use this in order to have a better result against them on Friday."

Starry led the SCU offense with two goals, while Allison, Brizgys, Mark Oda, Jon Greco and Josh Early also contributed goals.

Moore was once again a force in the cage as the senior recorded nine saves and two steals.

The Broncos will host UC Davis in a rematch at 1:00 p.m. at Leavey Pool on Friday in their final home match of the season.
