STANFORD, Calif. - Despite trailing by only two goals after one period of play, No. 16 Santa Clara struggled to net more of its own in a 10-4 loss to No. 3 Stanford on the road at Avery Aquatic Center.

Junior utility Nicholas Poggetti scored two of Santa Clara's four goals, and the remaining two were scored by Daley Meistrell and Jack Wall.

Michael Wishart made 10 saves for the Broncos Saturday, who fell to 13-6 with the loss and will travel to Berkeley to face No. 2 California and California "B" Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

Stanford scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead halfway through the opening period before Santa Clara got on the board thanks to Meistrell's goal with 2:27 on the clock.

But Stanford would answer with its third goal just 19 seconds later, and would score three more goals to build a 6-1 lead early in the third period.

Poggetti scored his first goal with 4:38 left in the third period, bringing the Broncos to within four at 6-2, but again, Stanford would distance itself as the Cardinal scored four more goals to take a 10-2 lead.

The Broncos would get goals from Wall and Poggetti in the final minute of the game to account for the final score.
