CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team opened the Convergence Tournament with an 8-5 victory over Occidental College this morning at Haldeman Pool. The Broncos followed with an 8-2 loss to Division III 10th-ranked Whittier. The split moves the Broncos to 7-13 on the season.

Although the tournament is hosted by Claremont College, the Broncos will play all their games this weekend on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer.

"The game against Occidental was a good, all-around contest for us," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We were in control for most of the game. Whit Gilfillan had a great game in set, and we had solid contributions from everybody."

Gilfillan scored three times against the Tigers, while Mark Hausle and Logan Gee posted two goals each. Mark Perlite rounded out the Bronco totals with one tally.

Against Whittier, Gilfillan and Nick Takahashi each scored once.

"The second game was a lot closer than the score reflected," Wilbur said. "We had a lot of opportunities to put balls in the cage and we just didn't convert."

Sophomore netminder had nine saves against Occidental and 12 more against the Poets.

The Broncos remain in Claremont and will take on Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman to close out play at the Convergence Tournament. Game times are 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pomona is ranked ninth and Chapman eighth in this week's Division III poll.
