Men's Water Polo Splits Matches at NorCal Tournament

Oct. 3, 2004

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team split a pair of matches for the second day at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton, Calif. In the morning, SCU dropped a close 10-8 match to Cal Baptist before battling back for a 10-7 victory over UC Santa Cruz in the afternoon.

"This weekend's wins over Redlands and UC Santa Cruz were very important for this team," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "To come back and beat teams we lost to early in the season shows that we are improving and will help us in the conference."

On September 19, the Broncos fell to the Banana Slugs in a 14-13 overtime heartbreaker. In Stockton, SCU was able to record a 10-7 win and even the season series with UCSC. Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz scored four goals for the Broncos to lead SCU to the win. Grant Allison, Matthew Martin, Jon Greco, Josh Early and Charlie Moore also scored for Santa Clara.

In the morning contest, SCU battled to tie the score at 9-9 in the final period after trailing 9-6 earlier in the fourth quarter. However, the late Bronco charge would not be enough as Cal Baptist earned a 10-9 victory.

Flanagan-De la Hoz led SCU with a hat trick and four earned ejections, while Charlie Moore also had two goals. Austin Brizgys, Thomas Kelly and Matthew Martin also scored for SCU.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Moore had two solid matches in the cage, posting 17 blocks over the two contests. After recording 11 saves in the morning, he returned for a six-block and two-assist performance against UC Santa Cruz.

The Broncos will head to yet another tournament next weekend when they travel to UC Davis for the two-day Convergence Tournament. Match times and pairings will be set at a later time.
