Men's Water Polo Posts 6-5 Comeback Win Over Redlands

Oct. 3, 2004

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team notched its fourth win on the season after scoring two goals in the final two minutes in a 6-5 victory over Redlands at the NorCal Tournament on Saturday. In the morning match, the Broncos fell to Navy, 16-10.

"The win over Redlands was a big one for this team," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was the first time this season that it has been a close match, late in the game and we have come out with the win."

After trailing 5-4 with two minutes left in the match, SCU posted two goals to earn its first win over Redlands in the last two seasons. Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz scored his first goal of the match to even the score before Charlie Moore fed Luke Oda the game-winner to seal the victory in the final seconds of the contest.

Goalkeeper Peter Moore posted 11 saves in the contest, while Kevin Starry scored three goals. Along with Flanagan-De La Hoz and Oda, Charlie Moore also tallied a goal in the match.

In the morning session, the Broncos fell to Navy, 16-10. SCU posted four goals in the final period, but it would not be enough to earn the win.

Starry also scored a hat trick in the morning match, bringing his Saturday goal tally to six. Charlie Moore scored a pair of goals, while Oda, Mark Perlite, Patrick Noack, Matthew Martin and Grant Allison each found the back of the net. Allison also earned six kick-outs in the match to lead SCU.

Santa Clara will be back in action at the NorCal Tournament on Sunday, when it faces Cal Baptist at 7 a.m. The Broncos will also get a re-match with UC Santa Cruz after dropping an overtime contest to the Banana Slugs earlier in the season. That match will begin at 12:30 p.m.
