CLAREMONT, Calif. -
The No. 11 Santa Clara men's water polo team had a successful first day of the Claremont Convergence, earning two victories with a 17-5 win over La Verne and a 11-4 triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Against La Verne, redshirt junior Mark Soares and junior Nick Poggetti led the offense with three goals each. Also, sophomore Daley Meistrell contributed five assists and one goal. Senior Jack Wall paired two assists and three steals with one goal. In the cage, sophomore Michael Wishart and John Nash split time, each making five blocks.
In the afternoon against hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Broncos got multiple goals from Poggetti (3), Wall, (3), and senior Liam Farrell (2). Wall earned credit for two assists and senior Mike Sorgenfrei had three assists and two kick-outs drawn. Farrell also drew attention from the Stag defense, drawing three exclusions. Wishart, who played most of the game, denied La Verne nine times and also picked up an assist and a steal.
"It was a good start to the tournament," said head coach Keith Wibur. "We had good solid defense most of the day, and I thought we did a good job keeping our opponents goal totals low. When we play good defense it sets the tone for our guys and gets our offense going."
Santa Clara returns to action tomorrow, the final day of the tournament, at 9 a.m. against Fresno Pacific. The Broncos will end the tournament with a 1 p.m. game against Pomona-Pitzer.
