Led by Nicholas Poggetti's four goals, the No. 10 Santa Clara water polo team defeated Redlands Sunday morning in the second day of the Bronco Invitational, 13-9. Santa Clara moves to 10-2.
Santa Clara plays UC Davis at 4 pm later today at Sullivan Aquatic Center.
"Redlands is a good team," said Bronco men's water polo coach Keith Wilbur. "With us going up 9-2 on them shows we were really playing well, but I told the team I didn't expect to hold that lead. Redlands is well-coached. I knew they would make a run and they did. I am glad we weathered that."
"I think we could have played better defensively especially when it was five on six," continued Wilbur. "We could have shot blocked better. But we played hard, we were fired up this morning and overall I am happy with what I saw."
Santa Clara went up 4-2 after the first period with Redlands scoring first in the game. Poggetti scored three of his goals on the day in the first period and Stephen Hobbs added one.
Santa Clara took a 7-2 lead in the second period, holding Redlands scoreless. The Broncos went up 9-2 on two straights goals by Sorgenfrei in 30 seconds in the third period. Redlands came back to score three goals in the third period as the Broncos took a 9-5 lead into the final period.
Santa Clara went up 10-5 on Jack Wall's only goal on the day at 7:03 in the fourth period. The two teams traded goals with Santa Clara finishing off its scoring on a goal by Josh Luebke at :34 to make it 13-8 SCU before Redlands tacked on its final goal of the day at :33.
