Santa Clara Takes 10th Place At NorCal Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 12 Santa Clara men's water polo team took 10th place at the prestigious NorCal Invitational today, defeating UC Davis 9-4 in the first game to advance to the ninth-place match, but falling to Long Beach State in overtime 10-8 to finish in 10th place.

Against the Aggies, the Broncos fell behind 1-0 in the first quarter, but rallied with five goals in the second to take a 5-2 lead at half. Santa Clara scored three more goals in the third quarter, while Davis netted two. That was all the scoring the Aggies would get though, as the Broncos put in one more in the final quarter to win by five goals.

Junior Nick Poggetti and senior Mike Sorgenfrei had two goals each, while senior Liam Farrell, junior Mitch Klipa, sophomore Daley Meistrell, freshman Jack Penner, and redshirt junior Jeff Welch each earned one goal. Sophomore goalie Michael Wishart had nine saves.

In the ninth-place match, Santa Clara took a 3-2 lead into the second half, but fell behind by one goal at halftime. The Broncos caught up in the third, and each team scored twice in the final quarter to force the match into overtime.  Santa Clara couldn't hold on though, as the 49ers ran away with the win after scoring two goals.

Senior Jack Wall pitched in a four-goal effort, while Meistrell added two and Farrell and freshman Patrick Weiss had one each. Wishart had eight saves.
