Sept. 17, 2008
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 15 Santa Clara men's water polo team will travel to the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. to play in the 2008 NorCal Tournament this weekend. The Broncos, who are in the Pool C bracket, will take on No. 3 Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:40 a.m. Play will continue later in the day and on Sunday. Opponents will be determined based on who wins and loses in their bracket.
SCU comes into this weekend boasting a 4-1 overall record, after opening the 2008 campaign at the Princeton Invitational. The Broncos defeated a pair of ranked and unranked opponents on the weekend's play.
On Sept. 13, Liam Farrell scored the game-winning goal against then No. 20 Princeton, with 19 seconds left in regulation. Farrell went on to score 16 goals, post three assists, have five kick outs drawn and one 5M penalty drawn over the weekend, and was selected as one of two Top Performances of the week for the WWPA.
"Fifteen of the 16 teams in the NorCal Tournament are ranked in the top-20," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "This high level of competition is going to be a challenge, but it is a good challenge. It will help us prepare for our conference schedule coming up in the following weeks."
The Broncos will face either No. 6 Loyola Marymount or No. 13 Navy, who are also in the Pool C bracket, depending on the outcome of their game against Stanford.
