Santa Clara Stomps Slugfest
Sept. 23, 2007
The Santa Clara men's water polo team (8-6) ended the weekend with two more wins at Slugfest on Sunday, defeating Claremont 11-6 in the morning game and taking down Whittier 13-5 in the afternoon. After a rough stretch in the beginning of the season, the Broncos are starting to come together, winning their last six games in convincing fashion.
In the game against Claremont, Tommy Hendrickson continued his hot streak and led the team with seven goals, five steals, and an assist.
Mike Sorgenfrei had two steals and three assists for the Broncos in the game. Josh Early and Charlie Moore both had one goal apiece. Matt Adler stepped up with an assist, a steal, and three kickouts drawn.
Luke Oda did an excellent job drawing kickouts as he has been lately, drawing a season high five. "That was really big for us," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It created a lot of shooting opportunities for the team."
Robert Callahan was solid in the cage, blocking 10 shots.
In the afternoon game against Whittier, the team spread the scoring around. Liam Farrell, Tommy Kelly, Adler, and Hendrickson all scored two goals apiece. Jeff Welch, Nicholas Poggetti, Stephen Hobbs, Oda, and Sorgenfrei all scored one goal. Farrell also contributed three kickouts.
Callahan again was stingy in goal, blocking nine shots while adding three steals and two assists.
During the team's win streak, they have outscored their opponents 83-37. Their next test comes next Saturday at noon against UC Davis. It would not be much of a stretch to say that the Broncos team that faces UC Davis next weekend will be a much different team than the one that lost to them 8-6 earlier in the season.
