SANTA CRUZ, Calif -The Santa Clara men's water polo team made a statement this weekend at the SlugFest, winning four straight matches to improve their record to 4-8. Saturday's results included wins over 15th ranked University of Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, and on Sunday, Santa Clara defeated California Lutheran University by a score of 15-7, followed by a victory over Whittier College 16-11.
Offensively, the Broncos have been dialed in, scoring 47 goals in their four games this weekend, including 31 on Sunday. Leading scorer Jack Wall continues to be a force, but several others are emerging as the team demonstrates their depth.
Freshman Liam Farrell had another great day after scoring two goals to put the Broncos ahead of Redlands for good on Saturday morning. Sunday, Farrell scored seven goals - four against California Lutheran and three against Whittier - and continues to be a force which opposing defenses can't seem to reckon with.
Both games saw a variety of goal scorers. In addition to Wall and Farrell, against California Lutheran the Broncos got goals from Kevin Starry, Anderson Clendeninn, Patrick Noack and Tommy Hendrickson. Junior Daniel Soares and sophomore Andrew Fitch each contributed two goals, and Rob Callahan had eight blocks, two steals and two assists in the cage.
In the afternoon match against Whittier College, sophomore Billy Gorin had a solid performance scoring four goals, notching two assists and drawing two kickouts. Once again, the Broncos spread the offense around, and had goals by Mike Detoy, Tommy Kelly, Mike Sorgenfrei and Tommy Hendrickson.
Now on a roll having put up four straight wins, the Broncos will be in Santa Cruz again next weekend to take on California Baptist University on Saturday, September 30th at 3:00 p.m., and then return home to Santa Clara to face UC Davis from the Malley Pool on Sunday, October 1st at 10:00 a.m.
