Figoni Earns All-WWPA Honors
Dec. 2, 2003
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University senior Daniel Figoni was named to the All-Western Water Polo Association second team, after a successful season in leading the Broncos to a 17-13 record and a No. 18 national ranking by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The announcement was made during the WWPA Championships in Redlands on November 22.
Figoni is a native of San Francisco and a graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory. A team captain, he started all 30 contests for the Broncos and led the team with 75 goals. Figoni's 24 assists were second on the team, and he also recorded 26 steals. Scoring in all but six of the team's contests, Figoni had 22 multi-goal matches, and netted at least four goals on nine occasions. He tallied 15 goals to open the season at the Inland Empire Classic, posted a season-high eight goals against Brown at the Davis Shootout, and capped his senior career with a six-goal outing at home against 18th-ranked UC Davis to close the Broncos' season.
Figoni was a 2001 Academic All-American by the American Water Polo Coaches Association as a junior. He red-shirted the 2002 season while studying abroad at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
"Daniel's got one of the best outside shots in the college game," head coach Keith Wilbur said midway through the season. "If the defense leaves him open up top, there's a good chance he's going to score."
