FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Senior Daniel Figoni scored eight goals to lead the 17th-ranked Santa Clara University men's water polo team to an 11-5 victory over Brown this afternoon. The match was the Broncos' second at the UC Davis Shootout. Santa Clara opened the tournament with a 7-5 loss to the host-and 16th-ranked-Aggies. As UC Davis' new pool is still under construction, the matches are being played at Solano Community College in Fairfield.
Head coach Keith Wilbur acknowledged Figoni's accomplishment, but also acclaimed Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz, Whit Gilfillan and Grant Allison, as the trio combined to draw 10 kick outs to spark the Bronco offense.
"Those three did the work today at two meters to give us many man-up opportunities," Wilbur said. "The whole team played well today. Daniel's a good shooter and when teams like Brown-who we don't see often through our season-give him looks, he's going to take advantage of it."
Peter Moore was also credited with a stellar performance in goal, contributing eight blocks and two steals to the defensive effort. Kevin Starry also had a strong defensive match, earning five steals. The Broncos' other three goals were scored by Flanagan-De La Hoz, Gilfillan and Jon Greco.
Against UC Davis, the match was tied at 5-5 heading into the final quarter, but the Broncos were unable to pull out a victory. Logan Gee and Starry netted two goals each, while Flanagan-De La Hoz added one score. Moore posted 12 saves in goal.
The Broncos, 15-10 on the season, will continue the tournament through tomorrow. Sunday's action will be against sixth-ranked UC Dan Diego at 9:15 a.m. and Division III third-ranked UC Santa Cruz at 1:45 p.m.
