Men's Water Polo Falls in Alumni Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team fell to the alumni team 11-10 in the second annual alumni game, hosted this afternoon at the Leavey Pool.

The team's played six quarters, with the current Broncos leading through the first three. Daniel Figoni led off the scoring, but alumni Dan O'Connell tied the match quickly. Whit Gilfillan scored on a rebound, while Sho Yamazaki scored on a cross shot to make the advantage 3-1 after the first quarter.

In the second frame, Matt Sanchez and Grant Allison scored to widen the lead, but Jeff Kopacek scored one for the alumni to make the score 5-2.

The alumni made it a one-point match with goals by Marc Hausle and former SCU coach Steve Hanson. In the fourth, Brian Stoelker tied the match at 5-5 with his score. Kevin Starry's goal with 3:55 remaining put the Broncos back ahead, but Bryan Failing tied the match at 6-6 with 1:47 on clock. With 13 seconds remaining, Hausle struck again.

Jon Greco, Mike Vancura and Figoni scored for the Broncos in the fifth period, but goals by former players Brian Sprouse and Hausle kept the match knotted.

Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz scored on a fast break with 2:37 remaining in the final frame to tie the game at 10-10, but with 1:45 on the clock, J.P. Doucette scored the game-winner.

The alumni team was represented by Kopacek, Hanson, Jay Moorhead, Jeff Raegan, Matt Rielly, Sprouse, O'Connell, Stoelker, G. Thayer, Bryan Failing, John Peacock, Dax Faragrose and Kirk Ostrowski. Former players included Hausle, Gareth Owens and Doucette.

Santa Clara (13-8) will return to collegiate action next weekend, visiting UC Davis for a Saturday noon match. The Broncos will then return home and host Cal Maritime at the Leavey Pool at noon.
