Santa Clara Men's Tennis Performs Well at First Day of Regional

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team had a very good day at the Omni Hotels/ITA Northern California Regional Championship on Friday afternoon at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center. The Broncos had three individuals advance on to the round of 32 while all five of their doubles teams advanced on to the round of 16.
Freshman Taylor Bedilion, freshman Chris Lam and junior Federico Mattioli all advanced to the round of 32 in the individual brackets for the Broncos, with two of the three matches going to three sets. Bedilion won his match over Arturo Planell of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, while Lam rallied to defeat Quinn Borchard of Portland, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Mattioli on the other hand, made quick work of Washington's Dillon Ruby, defeating him in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles action, sophomore Ben Hidalgo and Mattioli teamed up for an easy 8-3 victory over Oregon's Dubourdieu/Halberg. Sophomore Mike Bruggemann and senior Victor Camargo defeated the Borchard/Straub team from Portland, 8-6, while Bedilion and Erich Chen teamed up for a 8-3 win over Pacific's Kerschbaumer and Kadota. Sophomore Michael Duong and freshman Francisco Zepponi defeated the Anderson/Bitzer team from Nevada 8-4 while sophomore Rick Ruso and Lam rounded out the Bronco doubles winners with an 8-6 victory over Cal's Briaud/Patrick team.
Both of the singles and doubles brackets will be paired down to the final eight by the end of day two, which begins tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center.
