Men's Tennis Competes in ITA Regional Championships
Oct. 18, 2008
BERKELEY, Calif. The Santa Clara men's tennis team competed in the ITA Reginonals hosted at UC Berkeley. Senior Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and junior Jay Wong competed for the Broncos in singles and as doubles pairs. The SCU veteran combo each won their first round singles matches. Wong easily earned a first round win over conference rival, Conor Feeney, 6-2, 6-0, of Gonzaga. Hirakawa-Wong took on Fresno State's Tejesvi Veerepalli. Midway through the first set, Veerepalli retired from the match due to injury advancing the Bronco senior.
In the round of 64, Wong defeated the University of Washington's Skyler Tateishi in straight sets. Tateishi evened the score at six-all, but Wong was able to get past him to win the first set 7-6(4). In the second set, Wong blasted by Tateishi, 6-1, for his second win of the tournament. Hirakawa-Wong concluded singles play in the second round after taking Gonzaga's Stefan Fedderson to three sets. He won the first set decisively, 6-2, but could not keep the momentum and fell in the following sets, 6-4, 6-2, respectively.
In the final day of action for the Broncos, on Saturday, Oct. 18, Wong competed in the singles round of 32 and paired with Hirakawa-Wong in doubles. Wong faced California's Jonathan Dahan in the third round. After falling in the first set, 6-3, he worked to come back in the second set, but Dahan outlasted Wong and earned the win, 7-5.
SCU earned a first round bye in doubles and began play in the round of 32. The senior-junior partners took on the University of Washington's Alex Rosinski and Brad Bator in the second round. The pair could not overcome the Rosinski/Bator lead and fell 8-5, to conclude tournament play.
