April 21, 2002

MORAGA, Calif. - The 57th-ranked Santa Clara University men's tennis team fell to Loyola Marymount 5-0 at the West Coast Conference Championships this afternoon in Moraga. Santa Clara finishes the league tournament in fourth place and now has an overall record of 18-8.

"We came out flat and didn't compete as well as we could have," SCU head coach Sean Burns said of his team. "LMU played a great match. They got out to a fast start and didn't let up. They were ready to play us."

Burns mixed up his doubles lineup, as his tandems have been battling injuries and illness. Nevertheless, LMU swept all three courts, including a 9-8 victory at No. 3 doubles over sophomore Michael Duong and junior Federico Mattioli, who have only played together on one other occasion this season.

In singles, Burns said outgoing senior Victor Camargo played a valiant contest in his last as a Bronco.

"He wasn't totally up to par, but he was our most intense guy out there. He really showed his leadership skills today," Burns added.

The WCC announced All-League teams, with sophomores Erich Chen and Rick Ruso earning honorable mention in doubles. Freshman Chris Lam was named the conference's Freshman of the Year while also earning All-League honors in singles. Burns was named co-Coach of the Year.
