April 19, 2002
MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team defeated San Francisco 4-3 in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships this afternoon in Moraga. With the victory, the Broncos improve to 18-6 on the season. San Francisco earned the first point of the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. Santa Clara earned the team victory with singles wins on courts 1, 4, 5 and 6. Freshman Francisco Zepponi earned his 30th win of the season, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Christian Dyvik. Teammate Taylor Bedilion remained undefeated against league opponents at 7-0 with his come-from-behind victory on the sixth singles court to clinch the team victory. "San Francisco came out so fired up for this match, they just dominated us in doubles," Bronco head coach Sean Burns said. "And we still didn't respond because they won the first singles match too. We finally turned it around. Chris Lam played a solid match at the top of the lineup and Erich Chen, Francisco Zepponi and Taylor Bedilion came through again like they have all season." For the sixth straight tournament, Santa Clara will battle San Diego in the semifinal. The match against USD is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. The Toreros are ranked 47th nationally by the ITA. "If we're as prepared tomorrow as we were today, we're going to be in trouble," Burns said. "We've got to be ready to go before the match starts. It's going to be an intense one."
