SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 55th-ranked Santa Clara University men's tennis team remained perfect on its home courts with a 4-3 victory over Boise State in non-conference action this afternoon at the SCU Tennis Center. The Broncos' record improves to 16-5 on the season and 10-0 at home. Boise State, also known as the Broncos, moves to 9-11.

"This is the first time we've competed at the level we were during Spring Break," SCU head coach Sean Burns said. "We had a little bit of a let down the last two weeks, but I felt like we came back to that level today."

Boise State opened the match with a doubles victory on court two and clinched the first point of the afternoon with Jonny Biorkman and Guillaume Bouvier's 8-6 victory on the first court of Santa Clara sophomores Erich Chen and Rick Ruso. The home team avoided the doubles sweep when senior Victor Camargo aced match point for an 8-3 victory with freshman teammate Chris Lam.

In singles action Chen came off the court first with SCU's first point. Lam, ranked 116th in singles, upset No. 74 Marcus Berntson on the first court by a 6-4, 6-2 margin. Freshman Francisco Zepponi made it a 3-1 Santa Clara lead with his straight set victory on the fifth court.

Boise State countered with Bouvier's 6-3, 6-3 victory over sophomore Michael Duong on court two, but Santa Clara kept its perfect home record in tact with freshman Taylor Bedilion's three-set victory over Biorkman at No. 5 singles. With the score 6-3, 4-6, Bedilion opened the third frame with three straight games and then closed out the victory with a service ace.

"We had a team meeting last night after playing a not-so terrific match on Wednesday," Burns said. "Taylor probably spoke up the most. Today, he did everything he talked about doing in that meeting. It definitely impacted his play. He had one bad service game in the second set, but for the rest of the afternoon, he was engaged, intense and competed extremely well."

Boise State's final point came on the third singles court when Matias Silva rallied from a 3-4 deficit in the second to win 7-6, 6-4.

The Broncos remain at home and host Portland in West Coast Conference action tomorrow morning at the SCU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Santa Clara is currently 7-1 in league play. SCU will also travel to Fresno State for a Sunday competition at 2 p.m.
